In such a rarely granted artistic hour, the doctor may be tempted to look back and look around from a higher vantage point in order to gain an overview of the ground on which he stands and of the sources that feed him: where his science comes from, where it stands, where it is going. Thus, the historical approach presents itself to him as a postulate of deeper knowledge of his profession. Without a view directed into the past, there is no full knowledge of the present and no clear outlook into the future. The historical method is the key that unlocks the gate to understanding the intellectual situation and the scientific problems of today and tomorrow. Questions of the present and tasks of the future result only from facts of the past”.
